Dr. Xinyu (Jason) Cao specializes in land use and transportation interactions. He is internationally well-known for his research on residential self-selection in the relationships between the built environment and travel behavior. His recent work focuses on the applications of machine learning approaches in addressing the non-linear relationships in land use and transportation research. Dr. Cao is the Co-Editor-in-Chief of Transportation Research Part D. Dr. Cao received his degrees from University of California, Davis and Tsinghua University.


The transportation sector contributes to about 20% of global CO2 emissions, a major cause of climate change.  Accordingly, planning scholars and practitioners are interested in deploying land use and transportation policies to lower travel-related CO2 emissions. This talk covers two case studies in this context. Using the gradient boosting decision tree approach, the first study illustrates the efficacy of using built environment interventions to mitigate travel-related CO2 emissions and the threshold effects of built environment variables on the emissions. The second shows how banning motorcycles and e-bikes adversely affects car ownership and how it moderates the effects of other key variables.
